Yes, you can stream from OBS directly to a set-top box app, but because OBS output format does not match what TV apps expect natively, you need a middleman component.

OBS cannot broadcast an .m3u8 link over a local network by itself. TV apps like TiviMate, IPTVX, or VLC expect an HTTP stream link (an .m3u8 file or HTTP network stream), whereas OBS natively streams using RTMP or SRT protocols.

Method 1: The Easiest Way (OBS + Free MediaServer)

To turn OBS into a live TV channel that your set-top box can play, run a lightweight, free media server (like MediaMTX) alongside OBS on your computer.

[ OBS Studio ] ──(RTMP feed)──> [ MediaMTX Server ] ──(m3u8 URL)──> [ Set-Top Box App ]

Download MediaMTX: Download the free MediaMTX executable on your PC and run it.

Point OBS to MediaMTX:

  • Go to OBS Settings \rightarrow Stream.
  • Set Service to Custom…
  • Set Server to rtmp://localhost/live
  • Set Stream Key to channel1
  • Click Start Streaming in OBS.

Play it on your Set-Top Box:

Open TiviMate, VLC, or IPTVX on your TV box.

Add a stream or network URL pointing to your computer’s local IP address:

https://<your-pc-ip>:8888/live/channel1/index.m3u8

(Example: [http://192.168.1.50:8888/live/channel1/index.m3u8](http://192.168.1.50:8888/live/channel1/index.m3u8))

Method 2: Local File Sharing (No Extra Software Required)

If you don’t want to run a background server, write the HLS files directly to a folder on your computer that is shared on your local network:

  1. Create a folder on your PC named Stream and share it over your local network (SMB/Network File Sharing).
  2. In OBS, go to Settings \rightarrow Output \rightarrow Recording Tab.
  3. Set Output Mode to Advanced, then select Custom Output (FFmpeg).
  4. Set Container Format to hls and pick your shared Stream folder.
  5. Under Muxer Settings, enter: hls_time=2 hls_playlist_type=event
  6. Click Start Recording. OBS generates an output.m3u8 playlist file in that folder continuously.
  7. In VLC or a network file manager on your set-top box, navigate to your shared folder and play output.m3u8.

Method 3: Cloud RTMP (Best if streaming to a box outside your home)

If your set-top box is not on the same home Wi-Fi network as your OBS PC:

  1. Push your OBS stream to a cloud video service like Bunny.net, Restream, or Dacast.
  2. Copy the HLS / .m3u8 URL provided by the cloud service dashboard.
  3. Add that link as a playlist line item in TiviMate or IPTVX.
