The Detroit Grand Prix began as a Formula One race on the streets of downtown Detroit from 1982 to 1988. In 1989, the event transitioned to the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) series, which ran on the same downtown Detroit street circuit until 1991.
The race then moved to Belle Isle, an island in the Detroit River, from 1992 to 2001, and then again from 2007 to 2022. In 2023, the Detroit Grand Prix returned to the streets of downtown Detroit.
