THE CITY PRESS CLUB \u2013 DAYSunlight, brighter and warmer than usual, streams into The City Press Club. The heavy holiday decorations have been replaced with lighter, vibrant touches: vases of fresh spring flowers on tables, delicate green and gold ribbons woven into the pasta chandelier, and a subtle scent of citrus in the air. The \u201cSpring Equinox Soiree\u201d banners hang proudly.AVA surveys the room, a happy buzz filling the space. The Henderson review has brought in a wave of new customers, and reservations for tonight\u2019s event are fully booked.AVA(To herself, a satisfied hum)Perfect. She moves with a newfound confidence.ISABELLATable twelve just ordered three more of those lemon artichoke appetizers, Ava. They said they\u2019re surprisingly addictive.AVA(Nodding proudly)Fantastic, Isabella. Keep up the great work.Suddenly, a familiar, crisp voice cuts through the air. MRS. PERIWINKLE glides in, not for an event, but as a guest with a small, impeccably dressed group. She pauses, taking in the refreshed ambiance.MRS. PERIWINKLE(To her companions, a grudging tone)One must concede, the ambiance is\u2026 less overtly athletic than last time. The floral arrangements are\u2026 acceptable.Ava, spotting her, offers a polite but knowing smile. Mrs. Periwinkle catches her eye and gives a minuscule, almost imperceptible nod of approval.Just then, AUNT ANNA, Papa Rossi\u2019s elderly sister, arrives. She\u2019s formidable, with a traditional Italian lace shawl and a no-nonsense expression. She immediately spots Marco.AUNT ANNA(In Italian, then switching to English, loudly)Marco! I heard you\u2019re making newfangled spring foods. Where\u2019s the hearty Bolognese? What is this \u201cequinox\u201d nonsense? Good Italian food is for every season!Marco winces slightly, but approaches her with respect.MARCOAuntie! It\u2019s still Italian, just\u2026 lighter. For the springtime. We have a special lamb ragu tonight, slow-cooked for hours, just like Nonna used to make.Aunt Anna raises an eyebrow, considering.AUNT ANNALamb, you say? Hmph. We shall see.As the evening progresses, the Spring Equinox Soiree is a resounding success. The acoustic music provides a mellow backdrop, people mingle easily, and the spring-themed Italian dishes are a hit. Mr. Henderson even makes a brief, unexpected appearance, just to taste the lamb ragu. He gives Marco a quick, approving nod before disappearing.Ava watches as Mrs. Periwinkle, surprisingly, takes a second Limoncello Ricotta Tartlet.
